Meet the School Board Members

Shiloh Sorbello

School Board President

Shiloh Sorbello has been affiliated with WCS since 2005, when his wife (Samantha) was teaching at the high school. Shortly thereafter he got involved in coaching at WCS and was the varsity boys' basketball coach for two seasons. Samantha has since "retired" to be a full-time mom, but she is frequently seen taking pictures at school events. Shiloh and Samantha have been married since 2004 and have four daughters. Their oldest daughter is in first grade at WCS, and their second daughter will be a kindergartner at WCS starting in 2016. Shiloh grew up in Davis and attended local public schools. After graduating from Davis High School, he graduated from UC Davis with a B.S. in Managerial Economics and a B.A. in Spanish. He later obtained a Juris Doctorate from UC Hastings, in San Francisco, and passed the California State Bar Exam. Then, inspired by teaching opportunities he had during law school at Esparto High School and a San Francisco middle school, he went back to school and completed the teaching credential program through the UC Davis School of Education. He obtained preliminary single-subject credentials in Social Sciences and Mathematics and enjoyed student-teaching at C.A. Jacobs Middle School (in Dixon) and his alma mater, Davis High. After obtaining his teaching credentials, he began practicing law and currently works in Marysville as a Deputy District Attorney for Yuba County. Along the way, Shiloh continued coaching high school basketball. Shiloh has enjoyed coaching alongside WCS alumnus, Brian Ganyo, the WCS varsity girls' basketball team since 2013. The Sorbellos attend First Baptist Church of Davis. Shiloh sees WCS as an invaluable asset to the Yolo County community (and beyond) and is blessed to have served on the school board since 2011.

Debbie Simpson

School Board Vice President

Debbie Simpson is passionate about Woodland Christian School and the lasting
impact it has on the students and families. It was through this ministry, starting in second grade and attending through ninth grade, that Debbie first became a Christian and grew in her faith with the support and nurturing of her teachers and then administrator, Jack Hamlin.

In the early 1990's Debbie returned to WCS as an educator; teaching 2nd and
3rd grades at the elementary school; and girls P.E., geography and algebra I at the
middle school. However, in 1995, Debbie's husband Eric accepted a job that took them to
San Diego for nearly ten years.

In late 2004, a job transfer for Eric brought their family back to Woodland. This time, Debbie returned to WCS as a parent, enrolling their four children at WCS. It didn't take long, however, for her to join the staff again, first as an aide and substitute teacher, then as an afternoon kindergarten teacher, and currently, as the part-time human resources coordinator.
Debbie also served as the secretary on the WCS Board from 2010-2015, returning again to serve in 2016 after a year off.

As a student, a parent, a staff member, and board member, Debbie feels blessed to have seen so many lives impacted by the love of Christ through the education offered at WCS. She considers it a complete honor to serve on the board and see firsthand how God is working in the lives of our students and staff.

Eric and Debbie have been happily married 25 years and have four children; two in college and two at WCHS. They are actively involved at LifePointe Church, where they lead a small group and Debbie serves on the worship team.

Jack Hamlin

School Board Member

Jack Hamlin has been affiliated with Woodland Christian since its inception in 1974. He and his wife, Jan, had the privilege of being part of the founding of WCS. Jack was the initial Administrator and Jan, a kindergarten teacher. Jack served in that position through 2004, when he became the Executive Pastor of Valley Church in Vacaville, where he presently serves.

Jack did undergraduate work at Biola University and graduated from Sacramento State. He began his career as an elementary teacher in the Bay Area. He has served in the Association of Christian Schools International in varias capacities such as Accrediataion. He has coached, and was involved in the development of each level of the school.

Jack and Jan have three children, Julie, Jimmy, and Holly. They each went through WCS and now have the privilege of sending their children on the same course. The Hamlins are firm believers in Christian education and feel blessed to be part of a school where Christ is preeminent. Each of them are involved with the school in varioas capacities.

Jack is serving his second term as a board member. His commitment goes without saying. WCS is deeply ingrained in his life.

Mark Werum

School Board Member - Treasurer

Mark Werum has been affiliated with Woodland Christian School since its beginning. When Jack and Jan Hamlin visited Woodland to see what the possibilities were to launch a Christian school, Mark and his wife, Sherry, showed them around town. Since then, Mark has been involved with the school in various ways.
Mark and Sherry’s three daughters—Valerie, Janelle, and Katie—all attended Woodland Christian through ninth grade. (At that time, WCS did not include a high school.) When WCS was a ministry of First Baptist Church of Woodland, Mark served on the FBC church board, which was also the WCS board.
When the time came for WCS to build a campus on the Matmor property, Mark was part of the work crew for that endeavor. He worked with Ralph Stevens to build many of the cabinets that currently furnish the WCS classrooms, laid much of the irrigation pipe, and worked on several other projects. Mark and Sherry headed up the “Building to Serve Too” fundraising effort that contributed almost $500,000 to completing the buildings on the Matmor project.
Recently, Mark’s daughter, Janelle, moved back to Woodland specifically so her son can attend WCS. Mark has seen first-hand in the lives of his own children and in others the value of WCS and the educational and spiritual advantages it provides. He considers serving on the WCS board a natural result of many years of involvement in the WCS community over the years.
Mark came to know Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 12. At a Billy Graham crusade in Fresno, he responded to the call of God on his life. After high school, he attended UC Davis (UCD), at which time he was first introduced to the town of Woodland. While at UCD, Mark was asked to help start a Young Life club in Woodland; he spent four years helping and finally leading the club. He has many friends in Woodland who were his “kids” in Young Life. Mark also met his wife, Sherry, at UCD.
After graduating from UCD, Mark worked at Cranston International for six years and then left to open the Big O Tires franchise in Woodland. He owned and managed the tire store for over 30 years before retiring in 2011. Mark now attends First Baptist Church of Davis and is on part-time staff there as “the maintenance man.”
Mark has been active in the larger Woodland community, as well. He was a member of the Woodland Chamber of Commerce for the 30 years he owned Big O Tires. He has been a member of Woodland Rotary for 30 years and is a past president of that organization. Mark was on the board of Woodland’s First Baptist Church for many years, including several years as chairman of that board. Mark is also a veteran of six years in the US Navy Reserve. He plays the mandolin in his bluegrass/gospel band “By the Way,” but his favorite pastime is being a grandpa to his eight grandchildren.

Erin Richerson

Erin Richerson has been affiliated with WCS since 2009, when she and her family returned to the United States after serving for ten years as missionaries in Kenya, East Africa. Erin’s three oldest children attend WCS; the fourth is still at home. Erin and her husband, Brian, got married in 1997 and have spent most of their married life serving overseas. Erin graduated from UC Davis in 1997 and began her teaching career at Vacaville Christian School (VCS) the following year. At VCS, she taught seventh-grade History, eighth-grade Bible, Spanish 3, and high-school Spanish. Following her teaching stint at VCS, Erin continued to teach—in Kenya! There, she and Brian worked at Rift Valley Academy, a school for missionaries’ children. Together, Erin and Brian served as “dorm parents” for eighth-grade boys. Erin also taught seventh-grade English, Spanish 1, and Reading, while Brian used his accounting skills as the Director of Finance. Shortly after Erin and Brian’s first child, Jakin, was born in Kijabe, Kenya, Erin pursued a Master’s degree in Christian Counseling from Trinity Bible College. Then, in 2005, Erin became a full-time counselor at Rift Valley Academy, working primarily with middle-school and high-school girls. In 2008, the Richerson family returned to the U.S. in anticipation of the birth of their fourth child, and God unexpectedly called them to remain stateside. Erin and Brian are committed to investing in WCS. They appreciate WCS’s “tremendous staff” and care for their family, which includes three sons—Jakin, Silas, and Eli—and one daughter, Keilah. In addition to serving on the WCS School Board, Erin offers her resources as a counselor to WCS staff and families. With her family, she attends First Baptist Church of Davis, where she also serves on the music team.

Dan King

School Board Member

Daniel M. King has been affiliated with WCS since 1996 and is now serving his second term as a WCS Board member. Dan and his wife Laura have been married 21 years and have two children. Their daughter Andrea, who is currently a student at WCHS, has been at WCS since her preschool days. Their son Nathan resides in Glendora along with their grandson Isaiah. Dan holds an A.A. in Agriculture Business from Consumes River College and has been self employed in the insurance business in Woodland since 1978. He currently is one of the owners and serves as the Vice President of InterWest Insurance Services.

Dan was baptized at First Southern Baptist Church in 1980. The Kings currently attend Calvary Baptist Church in Woodland where they have been members since 1999. Dan’s service at Calvary has included time on their Board of Directors as well as various committees. Dan has been active in the Woodland community as well. Some of these activities include almost 15 years as a board member of The Friends of the Mission (benefiting the Yolo Wayfarer Center); Woodland Chamber of Commerce Director; a term as Treasurer, and a current member of Gideon’s International; 12 years of service on the Woodland Joint Unified School District Agricultural Education Advisory committee; member of the Woodland Joint Unified School District Bond Oversight committee, and a past board membership in the Woodland Adult Softball Association.

Dan’s experiences as both a WCS parent and a local businessman have shown him personally the value of Woodland Christian and the difference it can make in the lives of families and in our community. He sees it as a true beacon of light for our region and is honored to have the opportunity to serve its families and staff.

Chris Johnson

School Board Member

Chris Johnson has been affiliated with Woodland Christian School since his children started to attend in the fall of 2011. At the time, Chris and his family were returning to the Sacramento area after a 7 year stay in Southern California. Chris and his wife Heidi have been married for 17 years and have 5 children that all attend WCS.

Chris graduated from Sacramento State in 1993 and has worked as a Professional Pharmaceutical Representative for Abbott Labs and Abbvie Pharmaceuticals for 18 years. Although Chris has been aware of who Jesus is for his entire life, it wasn’t until about 2002 when he felt Jesus calling him to a full relationship of knowledge, trust, and surrender through the Savior of the world. Upon going to his first small group with his church, he recalls that he was nervous because “What if they ask me a question from the Bible and I don’t know it, will they kick me out?” Well, there were no questions and he was never kicked out. Instead, God used this experience for Chris to build a foundation of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ!

Since his first experience with small groups, Chris has led multiple groups over the last 10 years as well as teaching Sunday school for kids for 5 years. Then in 2014, Chris and his wife answered the call to quit their good jobs and move to Central America with their kids for a year. While abroad, he and his family lived among the local people and taught English, music, and held marriage conferences while teaching the gospel. Upon his return God provided a job for him in his previous company. Now, back at his home church of LifePointe Church in Woodland (since 2012), Chris serves as the men’s ministry leader.

Chris loves how Woodland Christian School places a priority on preparing children for a life of service to our Lord and Savior. While Chris and his family reside in Sacramento, he calls Woodland home and he is honored to serve the children, parents, and staff of Woodland Christian School.
